About Us
Two towns, one island and all the news to go with it.
Seven Mile Satellite is a local news organization that launched in 2019. We are a small staff of writers, photographers, videographers and editors who are looking to share their love for this island through the news.

The idea for Seven Mile Satellite was rooted in the lack of news coverage for the island. In under two months since the site's initial launch, it had 2,500 visitor's, and we are excited to expand our readership every year.

After a short break, we are excited for our 2024 relaunch and rebranding.
Founder & Editor | Shanna Kelly
Shanna Kelly is the founder and editor of Seven Mile Satellite. An avid beachgoer, she has spent her summers on the island her whole life. She launched the news site back in 2019 after realizing the island was a news desert. She started the site and social from scratch, ran a staff, and covered the COVID-19 pandemic for multiple summers.

Outside of Seven Mile Satellite, Kelly works for The Boston Globe. She is also a freelance editor for Stacker Media and an online analytics advisor for Hola Cultura.
She graduated with her master's degree from Columbia University's Graduate School of Journalism and also has degrees in journalism, Spanish, translation/interpretation and honors interdisciplinary studies from James Madison University's Honors College.

Being a NJ native, visiting the island in the summer months has been a beloved family tradition that stretches far past when he was born 15 years ago. So, when given the chance to explore the island and write about it, he jumped at the opportunity. John is so excited to share his writing with you.

Grace Shevlin is 17 years old and an upcoming senior at Bayard Rustin High School in West Chester, Pennsylvania. Since she's picked up this interest she has shot several fundraisers, weddings and many more events. Shevlin plans to continue her passion in college and make a career out of it someday. She spends all her summers in Avalon, so it's a very special place to her and a very special place to capture.
